Troops of the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, after a hijacking of a Cameroon‑bound passenger boat on Sunday.
Major Yemi Sokoya, assistant director of Army Public Relations, 13 Brigade, who disclosed this in Calabar, yesterday, stated that the vessel was seized by suspected sea pirates operating from two speedboats and a wooden craft near Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waters.
The pirates kidnapped the passengers and fled toward the surrounding creeks.
Reacting on the issue, 13 Brigade units stationed at Ikang pursued the criminals, engaging them in a firefight that capsized one of the pirate speedboats.
The pirates abandoned the hostages and escaped into the mangroves. All 18 passengers were recovered unharmed.
Brigadier General Patrick Alimikhena, Commander of 13 Brigade, praised the troops for their professionalism and speed, saying the operation underscores the Army’s commitment to safeguarding lives and waterways.
He urged the public to share any information that could aid ongoing security efforts in Cross River State.
