Arsenal Lead Race To Sign Fernandez

Arsenal have emerged as the frontrunners in the chase to sign Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez, with the Nigerian commanding serious Premier League and European interest ahead of a potential summer transfer worth up to £35 million.

The 24-year-old’s journey at Rangers began slowly after his move from Peterborough United. He started only one of the club’s opening 11 Scottish Premiership fixtures and was left out of six matchday squads entirely during that early spell.

But under manager Danny Röhl, Fernandez has since reinvented himself as a pillar of the Rangers defence, earning a place in the PFA Team of the Season and being widely recognised as one of the division’s most reliable backline operators.

His all-round contribution has caught the eye. The 6ft 5in defender has scored six goals, won 69 per cent of his defensive duels, and posted an 87.6 per cent passing accuracy alongside a 68.8 per cent dribble success rate. Defensively, he has registered 105 recoveries, 149 clearances and won over 72 per cent of his aerial battles.

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal are leading the domestic pursuit, with the Gunners carefully tracking the imposing centre-half as Mikel Arteta considers adding further depth to his defence.

However, north London is not the only destination under consideration. Chelsea have also shown significant interest, West Ham United are actively linked and could make a concrete approach, while Everton complete a notable Premier League contingent keeping close tabs on his progress.

The race is not confined to England. Bundesliga duo Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have registered strong admiration, with some sources indicating they were among the earliest to show interest, particularly Dortmund, who are viewed as serious contenders. Ajax, Feyenoord and Club Brugge are also monitoring developments.

Rangers are braced for a battle to keep hold of their star defender. With three years remaining on his contract, the Scottish club are expected to demand a fee between £25 million and £35 million.

Despite Arsenal’s leading position, Fernandez faces a potential logjam for playing time if he moves to the Emirates. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães are firmly established as Arteta’s first-choice centre-back pairing, while options such as Cristian Mosquera and several full-backs capable of playing centrally add further competition.

As a result, the Nigerian is likely to weigh his next move carefully – with regular first-team football expected to be a decisive factor in where he ends up this summer.
