Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup winners Manchester City will lock horns in the 2026 FA Community Shield on Sunday as the traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season takes centre stage in Cardiff.

The clash at the 74,500-capacity Principality Stadium will be the first Community Shield staged in Wales in two decades, with the stadium’s retractable roof providing a distinctive setting for the season’s first major domestic fixture.

For both sides, the match offers an early opportunity to lift silverware and lay down a marker ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal head into the contest as reigning Premier League champions after an impressive 2025/26 campaign built around intense pressing, tactical discipline and squad consistency.

Captain Martin Ødegaard will again provide leadership from midfield alongside Declan Rice, while Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli remain key threats from the flanks.

Arsenal have enjoyed a mixed but productive pre-season, recording victories over MK Dons and Girona before defeats by Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund. They ended their preparations with a 1-1 draw against Como, winning 4-3 on penalties.

City, meanwhile, begin a new era under Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure after his long and successful reign at the Etihad.

Maresca’s possession-based approach will receive its first competitive examination against elite opposition, with the new manager relying on established stars including Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Rodri.

City have also enjoyed an encouraging pre-season. After drawing 1-1 with Inter Milan, they defeated Team K League 3-1 before recording another 3-1 victory over Atlético Madrid, with Omar Marmoush scoring twice.

Recent meetings have given City the psychological edge. They defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the EFL Cup final in March before also winning the Premier League meeting at the Etihad in April.

City have won three of the clubs’ last five meetings in all competitions, compared with one Arsenal victory and one draw.

However, Arsenal will draw confidence from their 2023 Community Shield triumph over City, when they won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

With a new season about to begin, both sides will see the Cardiff showdown as more than a traditional curtain-raiser: it is an early test of ambition, readiness and title credentials.
