Arsenal Open Talks For Quansah As Defensive Crisis Deepens

Arsenal have registered their interest in Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, with exploratory discussions reportedly underway as the Gunners step up their search for defensive reinforcements.

The 23-year-old England international has emerged as an alternative target for Arsenal, who are also holding separate negotiations with Aston Villa over a potential move for Ezri Konsa.

Quansah’s versatility is understood to have attracted Arsenal’s attention. The defender can operate at both centre-back and right-back, offering manager Mikel Arteta additional options at a time when injuries are putting pressure on his defensive resources.

Arsenal and Villa remain some distance apart in their valuation of Konsa. Villa are reportedly seeking around £60 million for the 28-year-old, while Arsenal value him closer to £40 million, leaving a £20m gap between the clubs.

It remains unclear whether Arsenal’s approach for Quansah is a genuine alternative to Konsa or could be used to strengthen their negotiating position with Villa.

Quansah moved from Liverpool to Bayer Leverkusen in 2025, with Liverpool retaining a matching-rights clause as part of the deal. However, sources indicate that the Premier League club have no intention of exercising the clause should Leverkusen agree to sell the defender.

Arsenal’s need for defensive reinforcements has become more pressing following an injury to William Saliba, who is expected to be sidelined for an extended period after suffering a back problem at the World Cup.

Jurrien Timber is also struggling with fitness ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Coventry City, further highlighting the need for Arteta to strengthen his defensive options.

Quansah enjoyed an impressive campaign with Leverkusen last season, making 44 appearances and scoring five goals.

The defender also featured prominently for England at the World Cup, starting three matches at right-back before being sent off in the last-16 stage.

His ability to play across the back line, combined with his age and international experience, makes Quansah an attractive option as Arsenal assess their defensive priorities.
