Arsenal edged into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals despite being held to a tense 0–0 draw by Sporting CP in the second leg of their quarter-final clash, progressing 1–0 on aggregate.

Holding a slender advantage from last week’s first-leg victory in Portugal, Arsenal were made to work hard at the Emirates Stadium as Sporting pushed relentlessly for an equaliser that would have levelled the tie.

The first half produced few clear-cut chances, with both sides struggling to break each other down in a cagey contest. Arsenal, guided by manager Mikel Arteta, prioritised defensive discipline, while Sporting sought to exploit spaces on the counter.

Despite the visitors’ urgency, Arsenal’s backline held firm, ensuring the game remained goalless at the interval. The tension grew in the second half as Sporting increased their attacking intensity, forcing the hosts deeper into their own half.

Arteta cut an animated figure on the touchline as the clock ticked into the final 20 minutes, urging his side to maintain concentration. Sporting coach Rúben Amorim also made adjustments in search of a breakthrough, but his side were repeatedly frustrated.

A late push from Sporting, including a flurry of pressure deep into stoppage time, failed to yield the decisive goal. Arsenal weathered the storm, showing resilience and composure under pressure to protect their aggregate lead.

The final whistle sparked relief more than celebration among the home supporters, as Arsenal sealed a narrow but vital progression to the last four.

Attention now turns to a heavyweight semi-final clash against Atlético Madrid, where Arteta’s men will need a more assertive display if they are to continue their European journey.

While not a performance for the purists, Arsenal’s ability to grind out results could prove crucial as they chase continental glory.
