Arsenal Stumble At Nottingham Forest, Miss Chance To Extend Lead

Arsenal squandered a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points, drawing 0-0 with a resilient Nottingham Forest side.

The Gunners, hoping to capitalise on rivals Manchester City’s earlier slip-up against Manchester United, failed to break down a dogged Forest defence.

Despite having watched City lose, presenting them with the chance to go nine points clear, Mikel Arteta’s men couldn’t find a breakthrough. This marks the second time in recent weeks Arsenal have drawn a blank after a City defeat, having also shared the spoils with Liverpool.

While the draw extends Arsenal’s lead to seven points – potentially four if Aston Villa beat Everton on Sunday – the missed opportunities may sow seeds of doubt. Fans will recall their collapse in April 2023 when they let an eight-point lead over City evaporate.

Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, earned a vital point in their fight against relegation. Sean Dyche’s side, now five points clear of the bottom three, displayed impressive resolve throughout. Early chances for Nicolas Dominguez and Callum Hudson-Odoi hinted at their intent.

Arsenal’s best chance fell to Gabriel Martinelli just before half-time, but he somehow guided his volley wide from close range. Forest defender Murillo also made a crucial recovery block after miscontrolling the ball, denying Viktor Gyökeres.

Arteta introduced Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Mikel Merino before the hour mark in an attempt to spark his side. Saka immediately made an impact, setting up Declan Rice whose volley was saved. Later, Saka himself forced a flying save from Matz Sels with a guided header.

Despite a late onslaught and a VAR check for a handball, Forest held firm, securing a point that has ramifications at both ends of the Premier League table.
