Mikel Arteta has signed a new contract to remain Arsenal manager until 2030, with the Spaniard saying the club’s recent achievements are just the start of what is to come.
BBC Sport had reported earlier this month that an improved deal had been agreed. Arteta’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of the season, and the new terms could see him spend a decade in charge of the Gunners after he arrived in December 2019.
The extension improves on his existing salary of £10m per year plus a further £5m in bonuses. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who are both reported to earn more than £20m annually, were used as benchmarks for Arteta’s worth during negotiations.
Arteta said: “This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue.
“We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
The 44-year-old has won the Premier League and FA Cup during his time at Arsenal, while in May his side lost the Champions League final to Paris St-Germain.
Arsenal co-chairmen Stan and Josh Kroenke said: “We share a special bond with Mikel. We are so proud of everything we have achieved since he returned to the club in 2019.
“He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values and carries them in his heart. He knows what this club means to everyone connected to it and is committed to building on everything we have achieved together.”
There was never any real sense that Arteta was about to walk away from the team he has built into one of the strongest in Europe. Now that his future is settled, the foundation of Arsenal’s revival remains firmly in place.
