Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that he is compiling photographic evidence of rival Premier League managers allegedly breaching touchline regulations after receiving his second yellow card of the season.
Arteta made the disclosure after Arsenal defeated Everton 2-0 on Saturday, with goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhães securing victory for the Gunners.
The result moved Arsenal level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City, who suffered a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.
However, the Arsenal manager’s attention after the match was partly focused on his disciplinary record following another booking for his conduct in the technical area.
Arteta, who has developed a reputation for his animated touchline behaviour, questioned the consistency with which referees enforce regulations governing managers’ movements during matches.
He suggested that some rival managers repeatedly leave their designated technical areas without receiving similar punishment.
“There are managers that have the record in the league — 36 times in 10 minutes leaving the touchline, no yellows,” Arteta told reporters.
“So I’m clipping all of that. I have a massive storage of images.”
The Arsenal manager added that he was prepared to use the material to support his argument if questions arose over whether he was being treated more harshly than his counterparts.
Arteta was booked during the Everton match, while Everton manager David Moyes and Arsenal assistant coach Gabriel Heinze also received yellow cards from referee Tony Harrington.
The Arsenal boss now faces the prospect of a one-match touchline ban if he receives a third yellow card.
Asked about avoiding further disciplinary trouble, Arteta acknowledged that he needed to exercise greater caution during matches.
“I do have to be careful,” he said. “And we need to have good sensors there.”
Arteta’s comments have reignited the debate over the enforcement of technical-area regulations in the Premier League, with the Arsenal manager calling attention to what he considers inconsistent treatment of managers.
His photographic collection, however, has yet to result in any publicly announced disciplinary review.
