The Delta State Government has described the Sunday windstorm tragedy as “deeply saddening,” extending condolences to the bereaved family and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Recall that a tragic incident occurred on Easter Sunday, which claimed the life of a commercial tricycle rider along Okpanam Road in Asaba, Delta State, after a windstorm uprooted an aged tree that fell on a moving “keke,” leaving passengers injured.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, with many calling for proactive environmental management to avert future tragedies.

Confirming the incident, the Hon Commissioner for Environment, Jamani Ejiro, said he received distress calls shortly after the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene alongside officials from the Ministry of Transport and Environment.

“Upon receiving the report, I promptly arrived at the scene alongside my counterpart from the Ministry of Transport, Hon. Onoriode Agofure and in collaboration with staff of the Ministry of Environment, we made the necessary arrangements to evacuate the fallen tree and restore free flow of traffic,” he stated.

According to preliminary findings, the Commissioner revealed that several trees along the Okpanam Road corridor are overgrown with weakened root systems, making them highly susceptible to collapse during adverse weather conditions.

“Several trees along this corridor are overgrown and have weakened root systems, making them vulnerable to collapse during windstorms. This poses a serious risk to lives and property,” Ejiro warned.

He disclosed that the state government has commenced urgent steps to identify and remove hazardous trees in affected areas to prevent a recurrence.

“In view of this, we are taking urgent steps to identify and remove hazardous trees across the affected areas,” he added.

The Commissioner also called on residents to exercise caution, particularly during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall.

“We appeal to residents to remain cautious, especially during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall. We remain committed to safeguarding lives and ensuring a safer environment for all,” he said.
