Asian Football Confederation to Launch Nations League, Mirroring African Move

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced its intention to introduce an AFC Nations League, hot on the heels of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiling a similar competition for its member associations.

In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur-based governing body stated that the new tournament aims to elevate competition standards and enhance commercial prospects for national teams across Asia.

While a commencement date remains unconfirmed, the AFC affirmed that the competition will be held during existing FIFA international windows, thereby preventing fixture congestion in the global football calendar.

AFC General Secretary Windsor John hailed the initiative as a strategic development tool for the continent’s national teams.

“The AFC Nations League represents a significant stride forward in our ongoing commitment to bolster the development of our 47 member associations,” John remarked. “By introducing a structured competition platform, we intend to ensure consistent access to high-calibre matches whilst tackling logistical and cost-related hurdles encountered by national teams.”

The AFC currently organises the Asian Cup quadrennially, with the next instalment of the 24-team finals slated for Saudi Arabia in January 2027.

The proposed Nations League would complement this flagship tournament by providing regular, competitive fixtures between Asian national teams.

Asia and Africa are now following a blueprint established by Europe, where UEFA launched its own Nations League in 2018.

The UEFA competition was conceived to substitute low-profile friendly matches with more meaningful encounters, a model subsequently adopted or adapted by other confederations.

With both CAF and AFC embracing Nations League formats, global football appears to be entering a new epoch where structured international competitions are progressively superseding traditional friendly matches, offering augmented sporting value and commercial allure.
