The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has urged professional accountants to deepen their understanding of ongoing tax reforms to support fiscal sustainability and economic resilience in the country.
The president and chairman of Council of ANAN, Zuwairat Talatu Kishimi, made the call at the opening of the 2026 first session of the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme held in Abuja
Kishimi said Nigeria stands at a critical economic juncture, where fiscal policy decisions will determine long-term prosperity, stressing that implementing new tax laws is central to strengthening the nation’s revenue base and reducing dependence on oil.
She said the MCPD session, themed “Tax Reforms and Fiscal Sustainability,” was designed to equip accountants with the knowledge required to support the country’s evolving fiscal policies.
According to her, the reforms are aimed at broadening the tax base, promoting compliance and capturing emerging sectors, particularly the digital economy and high-net-worth individuals, to ensure equitable contribution to national development.
“The new tax reforms are not just about collecting revenue; they are about reshaping Nigeria’s economic future and protecting vulnerable populations while encouraging inclusive growth,” she said.
Kishimi commended the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, for approving the hosting of the programme in Abuja, describing his administration’s infrastructural and governance reforms as instrumental to sustainable development in the nation’s capital.
In his welcome address, the branch chairman of ANAN, FCT 1, Allan Tsaku, said the hosting of the MCPD session underscored the association’s commitment to continuous learning, professional excellence and national development.
Tsaku described the programme’s theme as timely, noting that Nigeria’s economic realities, including revenue challenges and rising public expenditure, require efficient tax administration and prudent fiscal management.
He said professional accountants occupy a strategic position in shaping and sustaining reforms that promote transparency, accountability and sustainable economic growth.
According to him, the MCPD session was carefully structured to deepen participants’ understanding of emerging tax reforms, policy direction and best practices in fiscal governance, adding that the knowledge gained would strengthen professional advisory roles in both public and private sectors.
He urged participants to actively engage in technical sessions and discussions, stressing that continuous professional education was vital to maintaining relevance and upholding ethical standards in the accounting profession.
Also, the chairman of the MCPD Committee, Hassan Ibrahim, described the training as a strategic platform for strengthening professional competence and adapting to evolving global financial and policy dynamics.
He said continuous professional education had become necessary for accountants to remain relevant amid rapid technological and regulatory changes, noting that taxation remains a key tool for economic stability and national development.
The acting chief executive officer of ANAN, Tijani Mohammed Musa, commended members for their commitment to professional growth and reaffirmed the association’s resolve to uphold high standards within the accounting profession.
Similarly, membership secretary of the association, Peter Anyanwu, charged the newly inducted members to uphold ethical standards and actively participate in professional development initiatives to sustain the integrity of the profession.
Meanwhile, the association’s media representative, Shodipe Moses, said the MCPD session reflects ANAN’s strategic commitment to strengthening public awareness of professional accounting standards and promoting informed discourse on fiscal reforms in Nigeria.
He noted that effective communication of professional initiatives remains essential in enhancing stakeholder engagement and public confidence in the accounting profession.
