Aston Villa secured a dramatic 3-2 victory against 10-man Burnley on Saturday, propelling them to joint top of the Premier League alongside Liverpool.
Douglas Luiz’s late penalty, striking off the underside of the bar, ensured Unai Emery’s side shared points at the league’s summit.
Villa, facing a potentially dismal festive period after recent setbacks, bounced back from dropped points at home and a Boxing Day defeat. Leon Bailey opened the scoring for the hosts, swiftly countered by Zeki Amdouni.
Moussa Diaby’s goal reinstated Villa’s lead before the break, and Sander Berge’s dismissal put Burnley a man down for the final 35 minutes.
Despite their advantage, Villa’s defense remained vulnerable, allowing Lyle Foster to equalize.
However, in a thrilling finale, Jhon Duran was fouled in the box, allowing Luiz to convert from the spot and secure the win for Villa.
