Management of AbubakarTafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has refuted claims of violating any laws in the process of appointing a new vice chancellor, asserting that due process is being strictly adhered to.
The university’s director of information and public relations, Zailani Bappa while responding to the allegations raised by ASUU said the management did not violate any law.
He said currently, there is no governing council, so the minister of education is performing the council’s responsibilities until a new council is constituted.
Bappa questioned ASUU’s focus solely on the vice chancellor’s appointment, pointing out other matters managed similarly in the absence of the council.
“In the absence of the council, promotions were conducted university-wide. Even the last convocation was organized with the Minister of Education’s oversight, though convocations fall under the Chancellor’s purview.
“University administration responsibilities include staff employment, promotion, and discipline, which are the council’s duties, were however carried out in the council’s absence, the minister of education assumes these responsibilities.
“Acting appointments are necessary during transitions. The registrar and bursar are currently acting. The University has advertised vacant positions, including that of the University’s Librarian.
“All procedures adhere to the law. For example, an announcement must be made six months before the vice chancellor’s tenure ends. The current vice chancellor’s tenure is about to end, so the position was advertised in compliance with the law,” he said.
