In a groundbreaking announcement that has sent ripples of excitement across Nigeria, Ishaku Bamaiyi, the President/CEO of the Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), revealed plans to elevate grassroots motorsport development in Nigeria through the inaugural Festival of Motorsport, set to take place next month.

The announcement was made during a signing ceremony in Abuja, marking March 4, 2025, as a pivotal moment in the evolution of motorsport in Nigeria. Bamaiyi emphasized that the Festival of Motorsport signals a new era for the sport, designed to engage youth and create abundant opportunities within the industry.

“We are committed to fostering grassroots development through programs that cater to participants aged 4 to 17,” Bamaiyi stated. “Our aim aligns with the vision of the National Sports Commission’s Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, to drive awareness and participation in motorsport among the younger generation.”

Established in June 2009, the ATCN serves as the official representative for the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Fédération Internationale de Motorcyclisme (FIM), and the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA) in Nigeria. Notably, the ATCN has held the FIA Sporting Power Holder status since December 2018, underscoring its critical role in shaping the future of motorsport in the country.

Bamaiyi reassured stakeholders that the festival will adhere to international best practices, particularly the FIA International Sport Code and FIM Statutes, prioritizing safety for all participants and spectators. “Our commitment is to ensure that all safety precautions are rigorously followed during our events,” he affirmed.

This multi-disciplinary festival will serve as a platform for young competitors to showcase their talents in various disciplines, including Karting Sprint for Juniors and Seniors, Drifting, Auto Slalom, and even Digital Motorsport. It not only aims to nurture future drivers but also opens doors for a range of careers within the motorsport ecosystem— from mechanics to engineers, marshals, commentators, and photographers.

“The Festival of Motorsport isn’t just about racing; it’s an investment in Nigeria’s tourism potential and economic growth,” Bamaiyi explained. “The results of our collective efforts will yield significant changes, providing economic value not just for competitors, but for promoters and the broader Nigerian economy.”

Alhaji Bashir Ibrahim, the Commercial Rights Holder and Promoter of the event, echoed this sentiment. “Signing this agreement is more than a financial commitment; it’s about grassroots development and nurturing our youth in Nigeria,” he said. “Motorsport offers vast potential and presents numerous job opportunities beyond just driving. We have a unique opportunity to elevate Nigerian motorsport to a world-class level.”

As anticipation builds for the Festival of Motorsport, the ATCN is set to transform the landscape of motorsport in Nigeria, paving the way for the next generation of athletes and enthusiasts in a burgeoning industry. With a focus on safety, expertise, and grassroots development, the festival aims to not only bring motorsport to the forefront of Nigerian sports but also to foster a culture of excellence that could eventually see the nation competing on the global stage.
