Atewe Hails Musa’s Appointment as Defence Minister

Retired senior military officer, Major General Emmanuel Jebe Atewe (retd., MFR), has congratulated General Christopher Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as a “strategic and patriotic choice” by the President.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Atewe said the President had made “one of the most consequential security appointments in recent years,” noting that Musa’s operational depth and leadership pedigree positioned him to steer Nigeria’s defence sector at a defining moment.

He described the new minister as an officer whose capacity had been tested across multiple theatres of operation.

“General Musa is an outstanding officer whose ability has been proven repeatedly. His appointment reflects the President’s commitment to strengthening national security with men of integrity, competence, and courage,” he said.

Atewe added that he was confident the minister would bring discipline, strategic clarity, and decisive leadership to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

“This choice demonstrates the President’s deep understanding of the security landscape and his readiness to consolidate gains made so far. The nation will benefit immensely from General Musa’s vision and experience,” he stated.

The congratulatory message also renewed attention on Atewe’s own service record, regarded within defence circles as one of distinguished leadership and operational excellence.

Born in 1961 in Edo State, the retired Major General rose through the ranks after completing the 29th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, where he served as Cadet Senior Under Officer.

He later commanded several elite formations, including the Guards Brigade in Abuja, the Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield in the Niger Delta, the 4 Guards Battalion, and also served as Deputy Sector Commander under the United Nations Mission in Liberia.

Under his leadership in the Niger Delta, crude oil theft dropped from about 70,000 barrels per day to roughly 3,000 barrels, a feat acknowledged by both security stakeholders and global oil industry players. He also oversaw the construction of a new JTF barracks in Yenagoa, saving the Defence Headquarters nearly ₦100m annually.

Atewe’s honours include the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award, the River Benue Star Award, and a commendation from the United States Government for averting a diplomatic incident during a UN operation.

A Fellow of the National Defence College, he holds advanced degrees, including a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan, and is completing a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies.

Stakeholders say Atewe’s endorsement carries weight because of his deep understanding of Nigeria’s defence architecture and his reputation for strategic clarity.

As General Musa assumes office, defence analysts believe voices like Atewe’s—experienced, patriotic, and rooted in decades of service—will help shape public confidence in the country’s security direction.
