Nineteen-year-old Nigerian athlete, Ekanem Consider’s 100m time of 10.10s has been ratified by the World Athletics as the leading time this year.

Consider stormed to the time to win the men’s 100m at the inaugural Dynamic Outdoor Meet held on Saturday January 27 at the Nigerian Navy Sports Centre, Ojo, Lagos.

It was the first competition for home-based athletes in the 2024 season.

Olympian Enoch Adegoke came second in 10.28s while Adekalu Fakorede was third in 10.30s.

Seventeen days after the event, Consider’s time has been uploaded by World Athletics, displacing the 10.13s Cameroon’s Itoungue Bogognie ran 21 days earlier.

Adegoke is 10th in the world leading time with his 10.28s at the Lagos meet.

His coach and former African 100m record holder, Seun Ogunkoya, is confident he will lower his time in subsequent races.

“Consider will run sub 10 seconds this season,” Ogunkoya said.

As the 13th African Games in Ghana approaches, Consider will hope to stake a claim in the men’s 100m for Nigeria when the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s trial begins in Asaba, Delta State on Saturday.

At the 2019 edition of the African Games in Morocco, Nigeria dominated the men’s 100m event and athletics generally. Raymond Ekevwo won the 100m in 9.96s while Usheoritse Itsekiri won bronze in 10.02s.
