The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has paid tribute to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo as he marked his 89th birthday, describing him as a statesman whose life reflects service, courage and dedication to national unity.
Atiku, who served as vice president under Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007, praised the former president’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s development and cohesion.
In a goodwill message posted on his official X handle on Thursday, the former vice president said Obasanjo’s leadership journey remains remarkable and impactful.
“As President Olusegun Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday, I celebrate a life that has been defined by service, courage, and an enduring commitment to Nigeria.
“His journey has been remarkable, and his contributions to the unity and progress of our country are truly significant,” he said.
Atiku described Obasanjo’s life as a testament to leadership and devotion to the Nigerian project, noting that his influence continues to resonate across generations.
He also prayed for the elder statesman, asking for continued strength and good health.
“I pray that God continues to bless him with good health, strength, and many more years of impactful service to our nation and humanity,” he added.
Extending his personal felicitations, Atiku said, “On behalf of my family, I warmly felicitate my former boss and a statesman whose life reflects the strength and beauty of Nigeria’s diversity.”
Meanwhile, Obasanjo dismissed rumours surrounding his death, saying he remains strong and healthy at 89.
The former president spoke on Wednesday during a colloquium titled: “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World,” organised as part of activities marking his birthday in Abeokuta.
He condemned those circulating what he described as a fake letter suggesting he had spoken about his death, insisting such efforts were futile.
“I dey kampe,” he said, indicating that he remains strong and in good health.
Obasanjo added that he believes God has a purpose for keeping him alive and active at his age.
He also criticised individuals wishing him dead, maintaining that he would continue to live and remain agile for as long as God wills.
