Atiku expressed his sorrow over the incident in a touching statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

He described the young athletes, who were full of promise and talent as the very best of the nation, noting their dedication and potential.

“These young men and women who have been cut in their prime represent the very best of our nation,” he lamented.

The former vice president highlighted the profound impact of their untimely passing, stating, “This is a profound loss not only to their families and the people of Kano but to the entire country.”

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emphasised the urgent need for the implementation and enforcement of safety measures to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.

“It is imperative that we put in place and enforce safety measures to stem accidents and prevent loss of lives,” he urged.

In the message, Atiku extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and the Nigerian sporting community.

He also wished swift recovery for those injured. “May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly.”

The tragic event has sparked a call for reflection on safety standards in transportation for athletes and the need for greater vigilance to protect the lives of those who represent Nigeria in sports.
