Australia have become the first nation to secure their berth at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, booking their place in Brazil with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over North Korea in the Asian Cup quarter-finals on Friday.
In a match that proved more challenging than the scoreline suggests, the Matildas were made to work for their spot in the semi-finals. Defender Clare Polkinghorne opened the scoring before captain Sam Kerr doubled their lead, demonstrating composure under pressure against a tenacious North Korean side. Chae Un-Yong pulled one back for the DPRK, setting up a tense finale, but Australia held firm to secure the win.
With this result, the Matildas continue their remarkable record of qualifying for every Women’s World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1995.
Awaiting them in the semi-finals are the winners of Saturday’s clash between defending champions China and Chinese Taipei at the same Perth Rectangular Stadium. As per Asian Cup rules, all four semi-finalists automatically qualify for the global showpiece, meaning Australia’s spot in Brazil is now officially confirmed.
The losing quarter-finalists will have a second chance to qualify, with a play-off for two more spots scheduled for the Gold Coast next week.
