Nick Kyrgios says he will not take part in the Australian Open in January because of ongoing injury concerns.

The 28-year-old Australian missed all four majors in 2023 because of wrist, knee and foot injuries.

He has played just one match on the ATP Tour this year – losing to China’s Wu Yibing in Stuttgart in June.

“I want to make sure my body is going to have the time it needs to come back,” Kyrgios, runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022, said on his OnlyFans page.

Australian Open boss Craig Tiley said Kyrgios would attend “in some form”, with Kyrgios saying he would “still be around, commentating matches”.

Kyrgios said last month “the stars would need to align” for him to be fit for the first major of the year.

The Australian Open takes place from 14-28 January in Melbourne.

“This is a very disappointing time for me, but I won’t be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open,” Kyrgios said.

“Obviously, heartbreaking. I’ve had so many amazing memories there, and I just want to really get back to playing at the top of my game and doing it right, and I need a little more time.”

Kyrgios enjoyed his best run in the men’s singles at the Australian Open in 2015, when he reached the quarter-finals, and won the men’s doubles title with good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis in 2022.

He also reached the Wimbledon final that year, losing to Novak Djokovic, and reached the last eight at the US Open.

However, he struggled for fitness in 2023, first withdrawing from the Australian Open with a knee injury before undergoing surgery on the issue.

He then missed the French Open because of a foot injury and Wimbledon with a wrist ligament problem, which also forced him out of the US Open.

“The update is day-by-day with him,” Australian Open boss Tiley said.

“He’ll be best to assess that, we’re going to have Nick here in some form or another in January.”
