No fewer than 11 persons have been confirmed dead and two others injured following a bandits’ attack on Gurbi Village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on April 26, 2026, when suspected armed bandits invaded the community and opened fire on residents.
Police said the attackers killed 11 people and left two others with varying degrees of injuries before fleeing the scene upon the arrival of security operatives.
“On receipt of the distress call, a joint security team comprising the police, military, and other sister agencies, led by the Divisional Police Officer, promptly mobilised to the scene. The assailants fled on sighting the advancing security forces,” the statement said.
The Command added that normalcy has since been restored to the area, while the injured victims have been evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased, it said, have been released to their families for burial in line with Islamic rites.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ali Umar Fage, has since deployed additional tactical teams to the area to prevent further attacks and directed intensified intelligence-led patrols in collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders.
The police also commiserated with the families of the victims and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
Residents were urged to remain calm and provide useful information to security agencies to aid ongoing investigations.
