Concerned members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bauchi State, under the platform of the Progressive Youths Congress (PYC) have called on Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to promptly lead his supporters into the party.
The group, led by Comrade Aliyu Abdullahi Ilelah, made the call during a press conference at Bauchi NUJ Secretariat yesterday, where they also rejected a faction of APC stakeholders opposing the governor’s reported plan to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
The youths reacted to a recent resolution by a Bauchi APC caucus, which opposed the governor’s defection, arguing that such a move could negatively affect the party’s chances in future elections.
However, the PYC said that Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa, who reportedly presented the caucus resolution, was himself elected on the PDP platform before defecting to the APC.
“The Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of association, and this right cannot be denied to Governor Bala Mohammed simply because some party members oppose his entry,” the group said.
The youths urged the public to treat the caucus resolution with caution, stressing that it does not reflect the position of the wider APC membership in the state. They called on party leaders to embrace dialogue, promote unity, and act in the overall interest of the party and the people.
They also extended an invitation to the governor to join the APC without delay, urging party members to accept him and his supporters.
Commenting on party leadership, Ilelah criticized the presence of the state APC chairman, Muhammad Hassan Tilde, at the caucus briefing, describing it as divisive and lacking neutrality.
He stressed that party leaders must remain fair and objective in order to foster unity.
He further argued that instead of focusing on opposing the governor’s defection, APC stakeholders should prioritise governance, effective service delivery, and policies that improve the lives of citizens.
According to him, claims that Bala Mohammed’s defection would weaken the APC appear to be driven by personal or factional interests rather than the collective good of the party
“At a time when citizens expect responsible leadership, such narratives risk creating unnecessary division and confusion,” he said.
The group maintained that integrating the structure of a sitting governor into the APC would significantly boost the party’s chances of victory in the 2027 general elections, including support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC candidates in the state.
They reiterated that rejecting the governor’s defection would be counterproductive, emphasising that inclusive politics and unity remain key to the party’s success.
