The Bauchi State House of Assembly has approved the recommendations on the proposed alteration of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to provide for the establishment of State Police services and related matters.
The resolution was presented during plenary on Wednesday by the Deputy Speaker and interim chairman of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, Jamilu Umaru Dahiru.
The approval followed consideration of the proposed constitutional amendment, transmitted to the state legislature for approval in line with the constitutional provisions governing the amendment process.
Presenting the resolution, Hon. Dahiru stressed the need to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, noting that the proposed establishment of state police could provide additional support in addressing the country’s growing security challenges.
He explained that the proposed amendment seeks to establish a constitutional framework that would enable state governments to establish their own police services to complement the existing federal security structure.
According to him, the House’s approval reflects its position on the proposed constitutional amendment and is part of the constitutionally prescribed process for amending the 1999 Constitution.
