Bauchi Assembly Workers Begin Strike Over Financial Autonomy

Bauchi State chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has commenced an indefinite strike to press home its demand for financial autonomy for state legislature.

Speaking to journalists in Bauchi yesterday, the state chairman of PASAN, Comrade Adamu Yusuf, said the action aligned with directives from the association’s national body.

He explained that members were left with no choice but to shut down activities at the Bauchi State House of Assembly until their demands are fully met.

According to him, the strike is intended to intensify pressure on the government to implement financial independence for state assemblies, an issue he described as critical to strengthening true federalism and ensuring legislative autonomy across the country.

Comrade Yusuf revealed that PASAN had embarked on several industrial actions in the past to enforce compliance with the Financial Autonomy Act, but the federal government had continued to delay its implementation.

He urged members to remain committed to the struggle, noting that the association had exhausted all peaceful avenues, including multiple dialogues and negotiations with government agencies.

Despite the nationwide action, Yusuf expressed appreciation to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for steps taken toward granting financial autonomy to the state assembly. He described the governor’s efforts as a significant contribution to the deepening of democratic governance.
