Renowned Bauchi Islamic cleric, Dr. Idris Abdul’aziz of Dutsen Tanshi, Bauchi on Monday has been released from Bauchi Correctional Centre after spending seven days in detention on charges of inciting public disturbance against him.
Last Tuesday, the Bauchi Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate Abdulfatah Baba Shakoni, granted bail to Islamic Cleric Dr. Idris Abdul’aziz of Dutsen Tanshi, Bauchi on three conditions.
Granting the bail to the accused, Shakoni granted the bail conditions as standing for him by a district head, permanent secretary in the state civil service, and a renowned Islamic cleric residence in Bauchi.
But he spent a week in custody until Monday due to his failure to meet the bail conditions.
It could be recalled that Abdul’aziz was last Monday remanded to Bauchi Correctional Centre following his prosecution by operatives of the State Police command.
Abdul’aziz was accused of inciting public disturbance in one of his tafsir during the preceding month of Ramadan, an action which precipitated controversies in the Bauchi Muslims Ummah leading to the creation of divisions among Islamic clerics in the state.
However, the Office of the Attorney-General of the state applied to the court for taking over the case from the police who initiated the proceedings of the case which the presiding magistrate granted the application.
Speaking on this development, chairman of the coalition of youth for unity and good leadership in Bauchi state, Yusuf Jibrin told LEADERSHIP that said Sheikh Idris has already fulfilled the bail conditions, “Malam has been released today Monday, 22 May 2023.”
