The Bauchi State government has approved over N20 million for the procurement of instructional materials to improve access to quality education for persons living with disabilities (PWDs) across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr Lawal Rimin-Zayam, disclosed this while speaking at a rally on inclusive learning organised by the Youth Adolescent Health Initiative and Counselling (YAHIC), in partnership with the Development Exchange Centre (DEC) and supported by Brot für die Welt, in Bauchi.

Dr Rimin-Zayam said the approval, granted by Governor Bala Mohammed, underscores the administration’s commitment to removing barriers to education and ensuring a smooth teaching and learning environment for all students, regardless of physical or learning challenges.

To him, the state has put policies in place to promote inclusive education, assuring that schools accommodating students living with disabilities would have unhindered access to necessary facilities and learning resources.

The commissioner noted that the government recognises the growing need to address learning disabilities in schools, stressing that inclusive policies are being strengthened to ensure no child is left behind in the education system.

Earlier, the programme officer of YAHIC, Mr Tameshiya Titus, said the awareness rally was designed to educate communities on learning disabilities, which are often misunderstood or wrongly perceived as physical impairments.

Titus explained that conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are linked to children’s cognitive development and when identified early, can be effectively managed to improve academic performance.

He added that the initiative aligns with the national education policy on inclusive learning and called for greater integration of learning disability awareness into teacher training and school curricula.
