A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Bayelsa State, Dr Domor Mienye, has moved to strengthen his support among young people by appointing former National Union of Bayelsa State Students (NUBSS) president, Comrade Pius Augustine Miediakumo, as coordinator for student mobilisation for the 2027 election.
The appointment signals an early push by the aspirant to connect with students and first-time voters across tertiary institutions in the state.
Miediakumo, who currently leads the Progressive Student Coalition, said the appointment of Mienye implied that young people should not be treated as mere spectators in politics
“Our students are not just observers in society; they are stakeholders in the future of Bayelsa. Any serious movement that wants to build long-term development must engage young people meaningfully and create opportunities for them to contribute ideas, leadership, and innovation,” he said.
The APGA aspirant added that plans were underway to visit universities and other tertiary institutions across the state to hear directly from students about their concerns and expectations from political leaders.
“We intend to visit university communities and tertiary institutions across Bayelsa because students are an important part of this movement. We want to listen, engage, and build a future that gives young people hope and opportunities,” he added.
Mienye described Miediakumo as a youth leader with strong grassroots connections and experience in student mobilisation, saying the movement needed individuals capable of communicating effectively with young people.
Responding to the appointment, Miediakumo described the move as an opportunity to encourage greater youth participation in governance and democratic processes.
“Dr Mienye represents a fresh and forward-looking vision for Bayelsa. His focus on structured governance, innovation, education, and youth development resonates strongly with many young people across the state,” he said.
He also urged students and youths to move away from political apathy and begin to support leaders they believe can promote accountability, development and better opportunities for young people.
