The drive to establish Benin City as a centre for elite sporting events has received a significant boost, with Zuid Sports International, organisers of the Benin City Marathon, securing the support of Senator Neda Imasuen ahead of the 2026 edition.
The development was confirmed during a courtesy visit to the lawmaker representing Edo South Senatorial District, where Chairman of the Marathon Organising Committee, Paul Ojeisekhoba, formally requested legislative and institutional backing for the successful staging of the race.
In his response, Senator Imasuen pledged full support for the initiative, expressing optimism about the rising profile of sporting activities within the district. He emphasised that sports development remains a vital tool for youth engagement and community cohesion.
The senator also cited the successful debut of the Benin Unity Cup last year—an initiative he sponsored—as evidence of his continued commitment to grassroots sports development.
Imasuen further assured organisers of his willingness to collaborate with credible partners to strengthen Edo South’s sporting calendar and create opportunities for emerging talents.
The 2026 Benin City Marathon is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 4 April, and is expected to attract athletes, enthusiasts and stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond.
