Centre for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) Benue State University (BSU) Makurdi in Partnership with the Benue Agricultural and Rural Development Agency has trained agriculture extension workers to help farmers improved farming practices and techniques to curb the menace of post harvest loses.
The centre leader, Dr. Barnabas Ikyo, who disclosed this during the Five-in-one Presentation and Launch of CEFTER’s products in Makurdi, explained that the main objectives of the training was to enable the trainees share innovative information with farmers to enable them improve on their agricultural methods to stop incessant wastage of farm produce.
Ikyo said, “We have also developed CEFTER Agro e-Commerce Platform which is aimed at connecting farmers, food harvesters and consumers using social media platforms.”
He reiterated the centre’s commitment to continue to work towards achieving zero hunger as one of its mandate for the benefit of the state and country.
In his remarks, the vice chancellor of the institution Prof. Tor Iorapuu, advocated for a ban on the use of polythene bags which he said had constituted a major problem for environmental hazards as a step towards protecting the environment as well as the echo system to enhance productivity.
While commending CEFTER for the products especially the fresh bags which are environmental friendly the don noted the centre’s achievements, and reiterated its commitment towards ensuring food security in Benue and Nigeria since its inception and appealed that more attention should be given to agro technology in order to enhance productivity.
