Music can be categorized in phases. There is always a particular music for a specific phase. There is music that serves as a time capsule for when you were growing up, when you were rounding up your first degree, etc. Whenever this music comes up, it transports you to that time.
Biggy Khali has been putting me in that phase since two weeks ago. I remembered playing the song when it was released in December 2020.
The Nigeria born artiste has more than a decade experience of singing and crafting up tempo songs.
“Ma Girl,” a delicate and sultry collaborative effort between Biggy Khali and Emmystringz and EmmyRaze remain one of the most slept on Afrobeats songs. Perhaps, the industry was not prepared for its release, now, there is a second chance for it. Biggy Khali has smartly uploaded it on digital platform, this way, he is able to court new fans, serves as a nostalgic tool for the old fans and in a way, make himself a force to reckon with in the Afrobeats music space.
A skittering guitar and string serves as the intro to the song with “Biggy Khali,” serving as the tour guide. The wording reminds you of when a hype man takes charge of a Friday shindig party.
The modulating production can be sometimes confusing yet the artistes on the song were able to align their lyrics to it.
“Ma Girl,” is a celebratory anthem. Biggy Khali and the featured artistes all combine to create a superb song.
The formulating elements of the song are many. One time, they are singing about love, how the girl makes them feel and the next second, the artistes tries to take the listeners to the club with the punctuating production.
Biggy Khali smartly achieved more than two aims with this song. While the song might have aged, the song still sounds good, more essentially the arrangement of the instrumental and the way Khali and his cohort sequentially arranged the song.
While I am not sure of what Biggy Khali still has in stock for the fans, I am however glad that old songs like this are finally having a new shelf life on streaming platforms. Perhaps, before long, we would have a new body or work from Biggy Khali for the teeming fans.
