President Bola Tinubu has credited his longtime ally, Chief Bisi Akande, with laying the political foundation that led to the historic defeat of an incumbent federal government in the 2015 general election.

In a statement personally signed by him on Friday to mark Akande’s 87th birthday anniversary, the President described the elder statesman and pioneer interim national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a central figure in the party’s emergence and consolidation, noting that his leadership provided the structure and discipline that made victory possible.

“As Interim Chairman of APC, Baba Akande laid the building blocks for a political edifice that, for the first time in Nigeria’s political history, unseated an incumbent in the centre in 2015,” Tinubu said.

The President praised Akande’s role in institutionalising democratic values within the party, saying his commitment to integrity, honesty and internal cohesion helped transform the APC from a coalition of interests into a viable governing platform.

Reflecting on Akande’s long public career, Tinubu highlighted his service as Secretary to the State Government and Deputy Governor in the old Oyo State, as well as his tenure as governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.

Tinubu said Akande’s political journey, shaped by the progressive ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, reflected a consistent devotion to democracy, social justice and good governance.

“Baba remains a mentor and leader, admired for his uprightness and unwavering belief in the values that ennoble the nation,” the President said, adding that Akande’s guidance and encouragement played a significant role in his own political rise.

The President also acknowledged Akande’s continued support for his administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the octogenarian as a dependable ally whose counsel remains invaluable.

Despite his age, Tinubu said Akande has remained active in national discourse and steadfast in defending democratic ideals.

“As he marks his 87th birthday, we pray for good health and renewed strength for a man whose contributions helped reshape Nigeria’s political history,” the statement added.
