The association also sought the government’s support in providing life-saving equipment and flying boats to enhance riverine patrols and ensure timely response during emergencies.

The chairman of the Association of Boat Operators, Mal. Abdullahi Yakub made these requests during a meeting with officials of the state Ministry of Transportation in Ilorin, the state capital.

He, however, hailed the state government’s unwavering commitment to repositioning the water transport system in the state and lauded the ministry’s open door policy, promising to expedite actions on the ministry’s recommendations.

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Alh Kabiru Salau, who represented the commissioner, Aliyu Korasabi, emphasised the government’s commitment to improving water transportation safety.

Salau added that the government would continually engage the boat operators on the technicalities of their operations, with particular focus on preventing recurring boat mishaps in riverine areas.

He urged the operators to ensure formal registration with the ministry to streamline their activities, collate data, and enable even and fair distribution of operational items to them.

“We appreciate the insights you’ve provided from your domain. Registration is key, not only for proper identification but also to help us plan and extend the necessary support. On training, the ministry will expedite action, as it is very important. Regarding life jackets, we are awaiting His Excellency’s approval before distribution commences,” he added.
