Nollywood actress and producer, Bolaji Ogunmola, has issued a public apology following a wave of backlash over a film scene containing derogatory comments about Yoruba women.
The controversy centres on a viral clip from the movie An Imperfect Match, where actor IK Ogbonna is seen making offensive remarks, describing Yoruba women as “dirty” and criticising their hygiene. The scene sparked immediate outrage on social media, with many accusing the filmmakers of promoting harmful tribal stereotypes.
Responding to the outcry, Ogunmola clarified that the offensive lines were not in the original script but were improvised by Ogbonna during filming. She further explained that although she produced the film three years ago, she lacked the authority to cut the scene then.
“I am an actor on set in this scene, even though I produced it. On set, my director has the final say,” she stated. “We never intended to stereotype any tribe; we genuinely just wanted to make a film people will love.”
The actress revealed that she has faced severe online bullying and threats to her life since the clip resurfaced. Despite the technicalities of film production, Ogunmola stated she is taking “full responsibility” for the error and reiterated her pride in her Ibadan heritage.
While some fans have accepted her apology, others remain critical, questioning why such “improvised” slurs were allowed to remain in the final edit of a project she funded.
