World Cup debutants Cape Verde produced one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far by holding reigning European champions Spain to a remarkable 0-0 draw in their opening Group H clash on Monday.

Few gave the African newcomers a chance against a Spanish side packed with quality and expected to dominate proceedings. Spain did exactly that for much of the contest, but Cape Verde’s disciplined defending and inspired goalkeeping frustrated La Roja throughout a one-sided encounter.

Spain controlled 74 per cent of possession and relentlessly pushed forward, creating an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.15 compared to Cape Verde’s meagre 0.04. The Europeans fired 24 attempts at goal, including seven shots on target, while Cape Verde failed to register a single effort on target.

Despite the overwhelming pressure, Cape Verde’s defence stood firm. Spain repeatedly probed for an opening, winning nine corners and forcing the African side deep into their own half, but they could not find a way past a resilient backline and a goalkeeper who produced seven crucial saves.

Cape Verde, making their first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup, showed tremendous organisation and composure to withstand wave after wave of Spanish attacks. Their disciplined display was reflected in just one yellow card and only a single foul committed throughout the match.

Spain will be left frustrated after dominating almost every statistical category, recording 10 shots off target and seven more efforts blocked. However, the breakthrough never arrived as Cape Verde defended heroically to secure a famous point.

The result represents a historic moment for Cape Verdean football and immediately throws Group H wide open. While Spain remain favourites to progress, they know they must be more clinical in front of goal in their remaining fixtures.

For Cape Verde, meanwhile, this memorable draw will be celebrated as one of the greatest achievements in the nation’s sporting history, proving they belong on football’s biggest stage.
