The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, in collaboration with AI Collective, is proud to announce the launch of Hack4Livestock, a groundbreaking national hackathon aimed at revolutionizing Nigeria’s livestock sector through technology and innovation.

This initiative comes at a critical time when Nigeria’s livestock industry, which contributes over 5% to the nation’s GDP and sustains millions of livelihoods, faces persistent challenges including disease outbreaks, inefficient grazing systems, market access barriers, and recurring conflicts.

Recognizing the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Hack4Livestock seeks to mobilize Nigeria’s brightest minds to develop practical, scalable solutions. The hackathon has already received strong endorsements from key stakeholders including the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, underscoring its alignment with national development priorities. Participants stand to win significant prizes totaling ₦10 million, with the top teams awarded ₦5 million, ₦3 million, and ₦2 million respectively, along with valuable incubation support and mentorship opportunities.

The hackathon welcomes diverse participants including developers, data scientists, agri-tech entrepreneurs, veterinarians, farmers, herders, and policy influencers, fostering a collaborative environment to drive meaningful change. Professor Demo Kalla, Member of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, emphasized the initiative’s importance, stating, “The President’s heartbeat is on livestock. This hackathon will unlock youth-driven innovation to transform the sector.” Similarly, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, Executive Secretary of the NUC, praised the initiative as “a visionary project ensuring livestock isn’t left behind in Nigeria’s tech revolution.”

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, also expressed full support, highlighting the potential of AI and digital tools to empower farmers nationwide.
