Brighton Humble Aston Villa 4-0 In Stunning Premier League Opener

Brighton & Hove Albion made a sensational start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

The Seagulls effectively settled the contest in a blistering first half, scoring all four goals within 31 minutes to leave Unai Emery’s Villa side facing a nightmare start to the campaign.

Brighton took the lead after just eight minutes when Victor Lindelöf turned the ball into his own net, with the goal coming after a defensive error involving Pau Torres.

Maxim De Cuyper doubled Brighton’s advantage in the 18th minute, finishing from Georginio Rutter’s delivery before Jack Hinshelwood struck twice in quick succession.

Hinshelwood made it 3-0 in the 30th minute before completing his brace just a minute later to put Brighton firmly in control.

Villa’s misery was compounded shortly before half-time when new signing João Gomes was sent off following a VAR review, leaving Emery’s side with 10 men for the remainder of the contest.

Brighton controlled the second half comfortably and preserved their four-goal advantage to claim three points in emphatic fashion.

The hosts dominated possession with 72.9 per cent and registered 21 shots compared with Villa’s six, while Emery’s side failed to record a single shot on target.

The result gives Brighton an ideal start under Fabian Hürzeler, while Villa face early questions after one of the most damaging opening-day defeats of their recent Premier League campaign.
