South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has praised his players’ tactical discipline and team spirit after Bafana Bafana secured a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

Thapelo Maseko’s decisive second-half strike proved enough to separate the two sides in a tense contest on Thursday, sending South Africa into the knockout phase where they will face co-hosts Canada.

The result marked another significant milestone in the progress of the national team under Broos, who has overseen a remarkable transformation since taking charge.

Speaking after the match, the Belgian coach highlighted the disciplined approach adopted by his players and their ability to frustrate South Korea throughout the contest.

“We played really well and created chances,” Broos said. “Tactically, we did really well and the Korea Republic could not find the spaces that they wanted.”

South Africa’s organised defensive structure limited South Korea’s attacking opportunities, while their quick transitions created several openings at the other end. Maseko eventually broke the deadlock, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and supporters.

Broos admitted the closing stages of the match were nerve-racking as his team fought to protect their slender advantage.

“We scored the goal and then it was 20 minutes with a very high heart rate,” he said.

The veteran coach also attributed the team’s success to the strong bond that has developed within the squad over the past five years.

“What we have done in the last five years is amazing. When you work together for such a long time, there is a connection. It is more than a relationship between coach and players; we have become friends.”

That unity has been evident throughout South Africa’s World Cup campaign, with the players displaying determination, discipline and collective commitment in every match.

The victory over South Korea has generated excitement across South Africa, with supporters dreaming of an extended run in the tournament. However, Broos urged his side to enjoy the achievement while remaining focused on the challenge ahead.

“We just have to enjoy this,” he said.
South Africa now face a stern examination against Canada, but confidence within the camp is growing. Having already overcome difficult opponents to reach the knockout rounds, Bafana Bafana will believe they have the organisation, resilience and togetherness needed to continue their impressive World Cup journey.
