Yobe State governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to support the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse across the state.
The governor gave the assurance yesterday during a public destruction exercise of large quantities of illicit drugs seized by the NDLEA. The event took place at Kasaisa village, near the Gujba–Maiduguri new bypass.
Governor Buni, who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, commended the NDLEA for its unwavering commitment to protecting society—especially the youth—from the devastating effects of drug abuse.
According to him, Yobe State Government has taken several proactive measures to combat drug abuse and other harmful substances across all 17 local government areas, in line with its vision of building a drug-free society.
Buni recalled that the state government recently procured and distributed patrol vehicles to all security agencies, including the NDLEA, NAPTIP, and NAFDAC, in recognition of their vital roles in safeguarding the future of society.
He emphasised that drug abuse remains a major factor fueling insecurity, displacement, and other social vices, noting that many criminal acts are committed under the influence of hard drugs.
The governor also commended the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ethical Re-Orientation, and the Hisbah Commission for their sustained enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse.
Governor Buni called on them to continue collaboration to reduce the menace to the barest minimum, describing it as a growing threat that demands collective effort.
In his speech, the chairman and chief executive officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Muhammad Buba Marwa (Rtd), represented by the director of Operations and General Investigation, DCGN, Alhaji Ahmad Suleiman Ningi, said the exercise was both a statutory obligation and a public demonstration of accountability, transparency, and victory over criminal enterprises.
He also assured that the NDLEA will not relent in its efforts but will continue to explore all lawful means to rid the country of the scourge of illicit drugs.
Also speaking, the Yobe State commander of the NDLEA, Commander Abdulazeez Kayode Ogunboye, expressed gratitude to the state government for its consistent support, particularly the recent donation of patrol vehicles.
He also appreciated the contributions of sister security agencies in the collective war against drug trafficking and abuse.
