Carragher Urges Liverpool To Prioritise Natural Salah Successor Over Barcola Move

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged the club to focus on signing a natural right winger rather than pursuing Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola as speculation over Mohamed Salah’s long-term future continues.

The former England defender made his views clear after reports emerged that Liverpool had opened preliminary talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a possible move for the 22-year-old France international.

Carragher, however, believes Barcola, who is most effective on the left wing, is not the right player to succeed Salah on the opposite flank.

Responding to a Sky Sports post on X that suggested Barcola could become Salah’s heir at Anfield, Carragher dismissed the idea, writing: “No, he plays on the opposite flank!”

He also pointed to what he sees as an imbalance in Liverpool’s attacking options, arguing that the club already have several players capable of operating on the left but lack a recognised right-sided winger.

“LFC currently have three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz and no one who plays from the right,” Carragher posted, insisting the Reds should be “desperately” searching for a specialist right winger rather than adding another player who prefers the left.

Carragher’s comments come as uncertainty continues to surround Salah’s future, with the Egyptian’s contract entering its final year and renewed speculation linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Although Barcola has established himself as one of Ligue 1’s most exciting young attackers with his pace and dribbling ability, Carragher believes Liverpool’s recruitment strategy should be centred on finding a genuine replacement for Salah, rather than signing a player whose preferred position would further increase competition on the left side of the attack.

His intervention is likely to fuel debate among Liverpool supporters over the club’s transfer priorities as the search for Salah’s eventual successor gathers momentum.
