A cameraman with Channels Television, Kani Ben, has died following injuries he sustained in a ghastly road accident in Bauchi State on February 6.

He passed away at about 4:00 a.m. on Sunday at the ICU of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Late Kani Ben, a native of Yola, Adamawa State, was a cameraman with Channels Television in Bauchi State.

The accident occurred on Friday, February 6, 2026, during an official assignment, along the Yashi-Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

At least 13 journalists from various media organisations were involved in the crash while covering the commissioning of projects executed by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) in the state.

The journalists were part of an NEDC delegation led by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, for the commissioning and handover of completed projects to the Bauchi State Government. Other members of the delegation included the Chairman and Managing Director of the Commission, the deputy governor of Bauchi State, and other government officials.

The delegation had earlier commissioned a Government Secondary School project in Yelwan Duguri before the tragic incident occurred.

According to our correspondent, the accident happened when the driver of the vehicle conveying the journalists attempted to overtake a convoy. The vehicle veered off the road and tumbled several times, throwing occupants out.

Several journalists sustained varying degrees of injuries, including head injuries, bruises, and compound fractures.

Kani Ben, who was seated in the front seat of the vehicle, suffered severe spinal cord injuries. He underwent surgery a day after the accident but later died while receiving medical attention.

While some of the injured journalists have recovered and had been discharged, four others remained hospitalised presently as at press time.
