Charlie Puth’s headline show at Madison Square Garden on Friday delivered more than just a concert; it became one of the most memorable nights in the venue’s storied history, as the pop star welcomed four surprise guests to the stage during a 23-song set as part of his Whatever’s Clever! World Tour.

Puth, currently on the road in support of his 2026 album of the same name, opened the guest appearances with perhaps the evening’s most poignant moment.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Art Garfunkel walked out to join him for a heartfelt duet on Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer,” the 1969 Hot 100 top 10 hit that featured on the duo’s final studio album, Bridge Over Troubled Water. Garfunkel wasted no time in establishing the dynamic between the two.

“He learned how to make his records from Paul and me,” he told the New York crowd. “You’re my student.” Puth embraced the label wholeheartedly, telling the audience that Simon & Garfunkel’s music was the very reason he was standing on that stage.

Midway through the set, the energy shifted when late-night host Jimmy Fallon appeared in sunglasses for a playful run through Toto’s “Africa,” the band’s biggest hit and a number one on the charts back in 1983.

After the performance, Fallon presented Puth with a custom New York Rangers jersey bearing his name and the number 26 on the back.

The surprises didn’t stop there. Rapper Busta Rhymes took the stage to deliver high-octane performances of “Break Ya Neck” and “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” along with his standout verse from Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now.” Finally, gospel legend Kirk Franklin brought the house down to close out the guest appearances, performing “I Smile,” “Lean On Me,” and a rousing take on God’s Property’s “Stomp” alongside Puth.

The show was the latest stop on a tour that kicked off just over a month ago and continues Saturday night in Atlantic City before heading south through the US and on to a European leg later in the summer.
