In a move that’s already stirring discussions in the fintech world, Chimoney, the Techstars-backed Canadian-based global payments solutions provider, has announced its acquisition of Scrim, a promising social payment app designed for the digital generation. This acquisition holds significant implications, especially in the context of PayPal’s ongoing restrictive policies in African markets.

Founded in Toronto by Uchi Uchibeke, a former Shopify engineer and Founder of Africa’s largest Hackathon, Chimoney has been making waves with its innovative approach to global payouts. Uchibeke’s vision has been to democratize access to financial services, especially in regions traditionally underserved by giants like PayPal.

The acquisition of Scrim is not just another corporate merger. It’s a strategic move to empower Africans and others in emerging markets, who have long faced discrimination in global financial platforms. Scrim, initially a standalone app developed by Pleasant Balogun, a Nigerian teenager and a prodigy in the fintech space, gained attention for its fun and user-friendly design and seamless integration with Chimoney’s Infrastructure and API.

While speaking on the acquisition, Uchi explained that for years, African entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses have struggled with receiving payments from global clients. Hence the need to close the gap.

“PayPal’s limited functionality in many African countries has been a significant hurdle, causing delays and financial losses. Chimoney’s acquisition of Scrim appears to be a direct response to this gap, offering a solution that not only enables global payouts but also integrates seamlessly with local currencies and payment methods.”

Pleasant Balogun started working on Scrim at 17, infusing it with a deep understanding of the needs of young, tech-savvy Africans. The app allows users to send and receive money using social media handles, a feature that resonates with a generation that spends a significant amount of time online.

With Chimoney’s infrastructure, Scrim is now poised to become a global platform that addresses the challenges faced by millions in receiving international payments. This is not just a financial service; it’s a statement about the capabilities and potential of African innovation.

Uchibeke’s leadership at Chimoney has been marked by a commitment to financial inclusion and economic empowerment. Under his guidance, Chimoney, initially built for B2B Payouts, has developed a remittance API that has been a game-changer for fintech startups looking to launch globally. This API revolution is particularly significant for African developers and entrepreneurs, who can now build and scale financial solutions that cater to local and global needs while being globally connected.

Chimoney isn’t just another fintech company; it’s at the forefront of the AI revolution in the remittance sector. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Chimoney conducts realtime transaction monitoring, optimizes transactions, reduces costs, and enhances the user experience. This technology-driven approach sets Chimoney apart and positions it as a leader in the global remittance space.

The Chimoney-Scrim deal is a wake-up call. Africans and the African market, often overlooked, is ripe with opportunities, especially in the fintech and web3 sector. Chimoney’s API and infrastructure are not just solutions for today; they are blueprints for the future of global financial transactions where sending payments to anyone in the world would be as easy as sending an email.

As PayPal faces criticism for its policies in Africa, Chimoney’s acquisition of Scrim stands out as a direct challenge to the status quo. It’s a sign that the global payments, especially to emerging markets, is changing, and companies like Chimoney are leading the charge. Investors looking for the next big thing in fintech should take note: the revolution is happening, and it’s lead by Africans around the world or happening right in Africa.

Curious minds eager to witness this evolution can join the Scrim app launch waitlist by visiting scrim.ai, a move that positions them on the frontline of the forthcoming revolution in social payments
