China, Dubai and the United Kingdom emerged as the top summer destinations for Nigerian travellers, according to new passenger data released by Emirates, highlighting the country’s growing appetite for international travel for business, leisure, education and family connections.
The airline disclosed that more than 44,000 passengers travelled from Nigeria on its network between May 1 and August 31, 2025, underscoring Nigeria’s increasing connectivity to key global destinations through Dubai.
China ranked as the most visited destination, receiving 11,530 Nigerian travellers during the period. Guangzhou accounted for nearly 80 per cent of all trips to mainland China, reinforcing its position as a major commercial hub for Nigerian entrepreneurs, importers and business travellers.
Other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, also attracted significant passenger traffic, reflecting the expanding commercial relationship between Nigeria and China.
Dubai remained one of the most popular destinations on the Emirates network, with more than 6,370 Nigerians travelling to the city for shopping, business, family holidays and leisure. The airline said Dubai continues to strengthen its reputation as a year-round destination while serving as a gateway to hundreds of onward connections across its global network.
The United Kingdom also recorded strong demand, attracting over 5,850 passengers from Nigeria during the period. London Heathrow remained the busiest gateway with more than 2,500 passengers, representing over 43 per cent of all UK-bound travellers, while Manchester continued to witness robust traffic driven by business travel and visits to the Nigerian diaspora.
The United States maintained its appeal as a preferred long-haul destination, with about 2,500 passengers travelling through Emirates’ network to 11 U.S. gateways. New York’s JFK Airport accounted for almost one-third of U.S.-bound travellers, while Houston, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago and Boston also recorded significant traffic.
Beyond the leading destinations, Nigerians also travelled to Delhi, Mumbai, Medina, Sydney, Christchurch, Mauritius, Seychelles and several European cities, reflecting diverse travel motivations ranging from business and education to tourism, religious pilgrimage and family reunions.
Emirates also reported a shift in travel behaviour, with solo travel emerging as the dominant trend. More than 61 per cent of Nigerian passengers travelled alone during the summer period, making independent travellers the largest customer segment. Families accounted for 17 per cent of passengers, while 12 per cent travelled as couples.
According to the airline, the trend reflects growing confidence among Nigerians to explore international destinations independently.
To enhance passenger experience, Emirates said it continues to offer regionally inspired cuisine, award-winning hospitality and more than 6,500 channels of entertainment through its ice inflight entertainment system.
Travellers connecting through Dubai can also enjoy the airline’s Premium Economy cabin on selected Airbus A380, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft serving destinations including the United States, the United Kingdom and China. The cabin features spacious leather seats, enhanced dining services and improved onboard comfort.
For premium travellers, Emirates’ First Class Private Suites on selected A380 aircraft offer private suites, gourmet dining, an exclusive onboard lounge and the airline’s signature Shower Spa.
Looking ahead to Summer 2026, Emirates said the latest passenger trends reinforce Nigeria’s growing importance within its African network, as more Nigerians continue to travel abroad for business, education, religious activities, tourism and family engagements through seamless connections via Dubai.
