China, on Friday, welcomed Russia’s decision to become the first country to officially recognise the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining friendly relations with the Afghan people.
“As a traditional friendly neighbour of Afghanistan, the Chinese side has always believed that Afghanistan should not be excluded from the international community,” said Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, during a press briefing.
The Taliban returned to power in 2021 after toppling the Western-backed government and have since implemented a strict interpretation of Islamic law.
Despite their efforts to secure international recognition and attract foreign investment, most nations have withheld official diplomatic recognition, citing human rights concerns and the need for political reforms.
Although China has not formally recognised the Taliban government, it has hosted a Taliban-appointed Ambassador in Beijing and maintained open diplomatic channels.
On Friday, Mao reiterated Beijing’s consistent diplomatic stance, “No matter how the internal or external situation changes in Afghanistan, diplomatic relations between China and Afghanistan have never been interrupted.
“The diplomatic institutions of the two sides in each other’s countries have maintained their normal functioning and have played a positive role in promoting the development of relations between the two countries.”
China has previously urged the Taliban to implement political reforms, enhance security, and improve ties with neighbouring countries as prerequisites for full diplomatic recognition.
Afghanistan continues to grapple with the aftermath of decades of conflict, including the Soviet invasion (1979–1989), civil war, and two decades of US-led intervention. International recognition remains a key goal for the Taliban as they seek legitimacy and economic recovery.
