An Adamawa State-based church, the Ekklesiyan Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), has alerted the federal government to the persistently high cost of agricultural inputs.
The church, during its Annual Ministers’ Conference at its headquarters, Kwarhi, said the prices of inputs such as fertiliser, herbicides and tractors remain “at rooftop” and leave farmers at a serious disadvantage.
In his speech, the president of the EYN, Rev. Daniel Mbaya, said the high cost of inputs is counterproductive and must be addressed quickly.
He admitted that food prices had crashed, which is good for consumers but not for the farmers, particularly given the non-corresponding high input costs.
The conference was held under the theme, “Pastors’ Identity in Christ,” during which the EYN president enjoined junior and senior pastors to foster mutual care and respect for one another for the overall good of the church.
One of the EYN ministers at the conference, Rev. Toma Ragnjiya, explained that the conference was intended to foster spiritual renewal among pastors.
He said, “We are being sensitised to accept that everyone is somebody. Even as a church, we subscribe to the African culture of respect for elders and regard for all.”
A foreign delegate at the conference, Rev. Ralf Rohrbach-Koop, said that, having visited Nigeria, he was impressed by the generally peaceful atmosphere and friendly people.
“Against what much of the world believes, Nigeria is peaceful and there is religious harmony,” Rohrbach-Koop told the newsmen at the conference.
