The Concerned Northern Forum (CNF) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to swiftly appoint a new Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation following the suspension of Dr. Betta Edu, who is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over fraud allegations.
In a press statement signed by the chairman of Concerned Northern Forum, Aliu Sanni Mohammed, the CNF expressed deep concern over the prolonged vacancy, emphasizing the critical need for strong leadership to address the nation’s rising poverty levels.
The group noted that with the current administration’s policies further straining vulnerable Nigerians, the absence of a competent leader in the ministry has exacerbated the situation.
“The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs plays a vital role in coordinating relief efforts and implementing programs that support millions of citizens struggling to make ends meet.
“The continued leadership vacuum during this period of economic crisis has dire consequences for those in need,” the statement read.
The CNF urged the federal government to prioritize the appointment of a new minister with the integrity, expertise, and commitment required to steer humanitarian efforts, restore public confidence, and provide necessary social safety nets.
They stressed that an urgent appointment is needed to mitigate the adverse effects on marginalised communities and ensure that essential programmes continue uninterrupted.
As Nigerians grapple with increasing poverty, the CNF calls on President Tinubu to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to addressing the country’s pressing social issues.
