The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has handed over relief items and building materials to victims of the recent Boko Haram attacks in four local government areas of Borno State.

They include essential items such as rice, spaghetti, vegetable oil, clothes, mats, blankets, and building supplies such as roofing sheets, ceiling boards, nails, rods, and timbers, aimed at helping the victims to rebuild their lives.

LEADERSHIP recalls that recent multiple suicide bomb attacks in Maiduguri claimed 28 lives and left over 100 others with varying degrees of injuries, while the Boko Haram terrorist attack in Ngoshe, in Gwoza local government area, left scores dead, thousands displaced and many others abducted.

Similarly, in Kukawa and Konduga local government areas, both soldiers, including officers and civilians, were killed while several persons were displaced.

During the presentation of the items to the representatives of the state government, the state coordinator of NEDC, Engr. Mohammed Umar said that after the attacks in Maiduguri by suicide bombers and in the three other councils, the management of NEDC engaged its team to take stock of the incident and the kind of negative impact it had on the victims.

Umar said the team, after taking stock, wrote to management seeking approval for the relief items and the managing director of NEDC, Dr Mohammed Goni Alkali, made the building materials available to the victims.

“And today we are here to formally make the presentation in categories. The one that has to do with multiple bomb blasts would be handed over to the state governor, Babagana Umara Zulum represented by the director of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Abdullahi Isa, while that of Ngoshe, Konduga and Kukawa would be handed over to stakeholders comprising the members of the State House of Assembly and the chairmen of the local government areas.

The NEDC state coordinator said in addition to the relief items and building materials, families of deceased victims of the suicide bomb blasts would be credited with N50,000 each, while those wounded and receiving treatment at the hospital would be credited with N30,000.
