The federal government has unveiled a new beauty pageant initiative, tagged Miss Migration Pageantry, designed to promote safe and regular migration while curbing the dangers of irregular journeys abroad.
The project, launched on Monday in Abuja through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and the Miss Luxury Foundation, will serve as a platform for advocacy, awareness, and empowerment, especially for young women.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI said the partnership was not about glamour, but about giving migration a human face and turning it into a transformational tool for national development.
“This is not just about a beauty contest but a platform to project migration as a positive venture requiring the support of every stakeholder,” the commissioner said. “We expect Miss Migration to become a strong voice against irregular migration, educating our young people on its dangers while showcasing the opportunities inherent in safe and regular migration pathways.”
According to him, the initiative, themed “Empower Her Voice: Breaking Chains, and Building the Future,” will equip participants to serve as ambassadors of hope in their communities. He added that the project would inspire innovation in migration advocacy, change perceptions, and mobilise resources for the rehabilitation and reintegration of returnees, with provisions for psychosocial support, skills training, and starter packs.
He stressed that the partnership would complement government efforts in promoting safe, orderly, and dignified migration in line with both national and international commitments.
For her part, Dr. Edidiong Udoidiong, founder and executive director of the Miss Luxury Foundation, described the pageant as “a defining moment” in Nigeria’s migration story.
“Migration is not just a statistic — it is a human story. It is the young woman fleeing traffickers, the boy crossing borders in search of hope, and the family displaced by conflict. These are the stories we want to bring to the centre stage, not as tales of despair, but as blueprints for action and empowerment,” she said.
Dr. Udoidiong emphasized that the Miss Migration Crown would mandate young women to act as ambassadors of safe migration and advocates for displaced persons. She noted that the foundation would use its grassroots networks, media platforms, and partnerships to drive advocacy, provide empowerment training, support policy implementation, and connect Nigeria’s migration agenda with international stakeholders.
“This is not a ceremonial alliance, but a working pact,” she said. “Through our auditions, media campaigns, and benefit concerts, we will fund rehabilitation and empowerment projects for displaced women and returnees. With NCFRMI, we can turn the tide against trafficking, unsafe migration, and the vulnerabilities that fuel them.”
She urged the media to help tell migration stories that inspire responsibility rather than pity and called on Nigerians to view the initiative as a collective mission.
The Miss Migration Pageantry will debut as a side event at the second thematic meeting of the Rabat Process, scheduled to hold in Lagos on November 4, 2025.
