The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has embarked on capacity building for its staff members to upgrade its information processing techniques to work with new advanced technology products in line with the federal government’s digital transformation objectives.
At the opening of a three-day capacity building in Abuja yesterday, the director-general of the commission, Dr Abdullahi Mustapha, said it had become necessary to establish adequate and advanced Information Communication Technology (ICT) platforms, including websites, portals, local area networks, internet connectivity, procurement of advanced personal computers, IT peripherals and various software packages and applications.
He said, “The fast-growing technological advancement in the 21st Century requires frequent upgrade of software and hardware as well as training of personnel to catch up with the advancement. Also, in this era of information explosion, the technology of yesterday is not enough to compete with the available technologies of today.”
He said this was one of the reasons the federal government initiated the e-government project and integrated all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) into the digital literacy programme through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with CISCO.
The DG stated that the development would enhance the efficiency of service delivery in MDAs, as well as the government’s digital transformation vision.
“We are building the capacity of our ICT staff and some selected categories of staff from other departments in the commission to equip them as IT champions who can help to provide help-desk support to users within their departments/ units when the commission is fully digitised.”
The ECN boss, who launched new advanced technology products for the commission, also encouraged all participants to actively engage, share their experiences, and forge partnerships that will contribute to the success of digital transformation and the achievement of the ECN’s mandate.
The director of ICT at the commission, Stephen Adebayo, who was represented by director of Electricity, Felix Olu, said the advanced technology products, coupled with the training, will boost staff morale and positively affect their productivity.
He added that the capacity-building programme was designed to strengthen the commission’s digital transformation capabilities and enhance operational efficiency in line with the ECN’s statutory mandate and the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy.
