Cooking Gas Sells Highest At N1,575/kg in Sokoto as Domestic Supply Rises 22% — NMDPRA”

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly used as cooking gas across Nigerian households, sold for an average retail price of up to N1,575 per kilogramme in Sokoto in July 2026, the highest among six major cities tracked, according to the latest fact sheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The report showed that average actual pump prices for the month ranged from N1,325 per kilogramme in Lagos — the cheapest of the six cities — to N1,575 per kilogramme in Sokoto. Kano and Enugu followed closely at N1,550 per kilogramme, while Ibadan recorded N1,540 per kilogramme and Calabar N1,410 per kilogramme.

Maximum actual retail prices during the period climbed as high as N1,650 per kilogramme in Kano, Sokoto and Enugu, while minimum prices ranged between N1,150 per kilogramme in Lagos and N1,500 per kilogramme in Sokoto, the data indicated.

The price movements came against the backdrop of a rise in domestic LPG supply. Total LPG receipts grew by 4 per cent month-on-month, from 5.1 kilotonnes per day in June to 5.3 kilotonnes per day in July, the NMDPRA said. The increase was driven almost entirely by domestic sources, which rose 22 per cent, from 3.6 to 4.4 kilotonnes per day, even as imports fell 40 per cent, from 1.5 to 0.9 kilotonnes per day, over the same period.

The report attributed July’s total daily LPG supply of 5.332 kilotonnes to five sources: NLNG/SEPNU vessel deliveries, which supplied the largest share at 2.031 kilotonnes per day, followed by other processing plants delivering via trucks at 1.513 kilotonnes per day, imports at 0.959 kilotonnes per day, and the Dangote Refinery (DPRP) contributing 0.829 kilotonnes per day.

Despite the improved domestic output, LPG consumption also rose, up 7 per cent from 4.1 kilotonnes per day in June to 4.4 kilotonnes per day in July — narrowing the surplus between supply and demand. National LPG stock sufficiency stood at 16.3 days in July, the lowest among the four key petroleum products tracked by the regulator, and well below the 30-day minimum threshold the NMDPRA considers safe. By comparison, diesel stock cover stood at 46.5 days and aviation fuel at 58.6 days over the same period.
